Primary Schools

We work in partnership with schools to look at ways to improve reading outcomes for all pupils.

We have an Ipswich School's Primary Reading Pledge for primary schools with a focus on all children leaving the school as confident and enthusiastic readers ready to take their next steps.

Schools agree to place reading and literacy at the heart of their school, which you should find improves all of your outcomes. As well as ensuring that every child is read aloud to, just for fun, most days to encourage children discover reading for pleasure themselves in the hope of developing a lifer-long love of reading. You can find our Pledge here and case studies from local primaries here .

We also believe that it is vital to involve parents in their children's development and learning, and see reading at home as a crucial part of that. So, a strong emphasis on engaging parents is important.

If you find parents who struggle with reading themselves, or you are aware of homes without any books, we can help: see contacts below.

In 2016/17 we received money from SCC Raising the Bar Community Fund for literacy improvements in schools. Schools used the money in a variety of ways to improve children's reading from one to one interventions, refreshing book stock, to introducing CLPE Power of Reading. See The Oaks Case Study.

More recently we have worked with 7 Ipswich schools and the Multi-Sensory Training Centre to look at Barriers to Reading. Many conditions exist which can slow or stop progress in reading, including dyslexia, Irlen's Syndrome, 'Retained Primitive Reflexes ( RPR)' and poor eyesight. We can help link you to experts in such conditions as RPR, who would be very willing to give your staff appropriate training to enable the children to be identified and help them overcome the problems using very simple exercises. Statistics on our recent trial and case studies here .
